A vigil for victims of last week’s school shooting in Connecticut was held in Lebanon Friday night.

More than a thousand people lined an 18-mile stretch of 422 from Myerstown to Palmyra with electronic candles and lights to show their support.

Organizers of the event said they hoped it would help people grieve after shooter Adam Lanza killed his mother, 20 children, and six educators before killing himself at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut last Friday.

“I think it helps with a grieving process. Especially people who had family or anybody over there that had to go through that,” said Chris Ahnert, who attended the vigil.

Others who attended said although they didn’t know the families, the tragedy has forever changed their perspective.

“My son’s name is Jesse Lewis and one of the kids’ names was Jesse Lewis. It really touched my heart. Imagine if that was him, I wouldn’t know what to do,” said parent Donna Wolfe.
