Retired 4-star U.S. Army General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr., has died in Tampa, Florida.  He was 78.  President George H.W. Bush selected General Schwarzkopf to command the U.S. led international coalition that defeated Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s forces and liberated Kuwait in the first Persian Gulf War in 1991.  Schwarzkopf was born in Trenton, New Jersey.  After graduating 43rd in his class at West Point he served in the Army from 1956 to 1991. He saw combat in Vietnam. After retiring from the Army in 1992, Schwarzkopf wrote a best-selling autobiography, “It Doesn’t Take a Hero”.

The General had several Pennsylvania connections. Prior to enrollment at West Point, he attended the Valley Forge Military Academy.  He later attended the U.S. Army War College Carlisle Barracks in Cumberland County.  The General is survived by his wife and three grown children.
