Man fights off would-be robber in Perry County

A man fought off a would-be robber outside of a bank in Perry County on Monday morning. Two men have been arrested in connection to the crime.  It happened along the 200 block of Market Street in Newport Borough.The victim was standing outside of the bank when a man approached him, pulled out a gun and demanded money, state police said.

The victim fought back and the suspect took off empty-handed.

The robber got into a getaway vehicle and took off.

Troopers arrested James Edward Rider Jr., of Newport, and have identified him as the driver of the getaway vehicle.

The suspect who held the victim at gunpoint has also been arrested and taken to Perry County Prison on unrelated charges. Troopers are not releasing his identity until the robbery charges are filed.

    That bank is diagonally across the street from where the Newport Borough Police USED to be, before the majority of the Newport Borough Coucil disbanded our police department. There are no words to describe how much this infuriates me. We need to disband the council members who made that inane (insane too) decision.
