Rick Santorum Says Boy Scouts May Not Survive If Gays Allowed

(CNN) – Potential changes which could end the ban on gay boy scouts signal “a challenge to the Scouts’ very nature,” conservative activist and former Sen. Rick Santorum wrote Monday.

His column, published online on the right wing website World Net Daily, comes as the Boy Scouts of America prepares to discuss changing their longstanding national ban on gay scouts and scoutmasters at an upcoming meeting.

Removing that ban is “another example of the left attempting to remove God from all areas of public life,” Santorum alleged in his op-ed, pointing to a “long list of liberal victories” that he said included abortion, affirmative action and “sexual liberation.”

“Scouting may not survive this transformation of American society, but for the sake of the average boy in America, I hope the board of the Scouts doesn’t have its fingerprints on the murder weapon,” he wrote.

The potential change to the Scouts’ rules follows protests after a den leader was forced out of her post because she is openly gay. The organization made no changes to their policies on gay membership after a recent lengthy internal review, but the issue is expected to resurface at a meeting this month.

One possible change to national policy would allow local chapters to determine whether to accept gay members. If the national board approved that measure, individual troops could dictate membership “consistent with each organization’s mission, principles, or religious beliefs,” according to a statement last week.

That alteration of policy would be equally devastating, Santorum wrote, since troops that maintain their ban on gay scouts would no longer be protected from legal protection against civil lawsuits. He also predicted those troops hoping to preserve the ban would simply leave the organization altogether.

“Many will simply leave and pursue alternative ways to continue to invest in the development of their young men’s character, leaving the Scouts hollowed out at its core,” he wrote.

The former GOP presidential candidate also identified a socio-economic divide in the debate over allowing gay boy scouts, asserting the wealthy CEOs who comprise the Boy Scouts’ board would be shielded from the negative effects of lifting the ban.

“It makes sense that men at the top of the food chain whose boys are insulated, although not immune, from the harmful effects of societal change are behind this effort,” he said.

Rick Perry, the Texas governor and another former GOP presidential candidate, weighed in against the ending the ban on Saturday, telling a statewide gathering of scouts that “most people see absolutely no reason to change the position and neither do I.”

“Scouting is about teaching a substantial amount of life lessons,” Perry, a former Eagle Scout, said. “Sexuality is not one of them. It never has been; it doesn’t need to be.”

Yes, Mr. Santorum, the sky is falling. The country will perish. The devil will dance on our souls. Please save yourself and go back to your cave so you procreate a better society after the heathens have been terminated.

Mr. Perry, the scouts do not teach sexuality now so what makes you think they will teach it after this change? Freedom. Isn't that what it is all about with you and your cronies like Santorum? Flip the pages of your calendar. It's 2013 and horse-drawn wagons and slaves are past.

I seriously can not believe that Rick the idiot actually said this out loud and in front of the news media. Or did he call the news and tell them that he wanted to go on record with this stance. Please Rick, run for another political office and we can show you how we feel about your comments. We can force you out of the political scene just as we pushed Arlen Specter out of office for changing his politics every time it didn't suit him. There have been gay scouts for years and also gay scout leaders. If you run again, I will actively work against you being re-elected. Noting all the comments on Facebook, I would say that he (RS) should just shut up.

This is nonsense. Can a young man lead a brownie troop?
Close the scouts down rather than give in to this propaganda/pressure machine.

Yes, a man can lead a Brownie Troop. There needs to be at least a women present.

Rick Santorum is seriously mentally ill. He is so wrapped up in the damn Bible that he forgets that the Constitution says We the People, not We the Heterosexuals.

Thousands of conservative men and women donate hundreds of hours each annually to the success of Boy Scouts. Now that the progressives have politicized this issue, I wonder how many will now be willing to now lend support. Fo now, Scouts still need to say the Pledge of Allegience, sware duty to God, help others, take personal responseability and learn to become leaders. None of these ideals usually site well with liberals. Now that they see success with the BSA, will they move on to attach their next cause?

As an Eagle Scout, I'm offended that someone who, as far as I can tell, didn't actually participate in Boy Scouts as a youth, wants to tell us what will and will not "kill" our organization. There has been an enormous upheaval against national leadership since last summer's announcement of the gay ban remaining in place. The change is coming, and it is coming soon. We don't need some politician shouting out his own butt and telling us how to run our groups.

I too am an Eagle Scout and have actively involved in Scouting for over 25 years ( a short time when compared to many scouters in my council.) I am sorry that you are offended but Scouting does teach us to be Courteous and we can politely disagree. It is curious to me that someone who participates in behavior that is fundamentally unclean and potentially harmful to both parties would want to take an Oath that says he/she will do their best to be clean (among other things) . I agree that we do not need some politician (or others) telling us how to run our groups (Packs/Troops/Crews) including those pushing for this change.

As far as leaving goes, our charter organization will very likely leave the BSA if this change is made. If so, we just simply start over just as the BSA started 103 years this Friday. I personally would like to see the National Council strengthen its membership standards enforcing them among all leaders. Any behavior inconsistent with Scouting ideals should disqualify a leader. This would include leaders who are having extramarital affairs, singles involved in sexual relationships outside of marriage, leaders who openly lie, cheat, steal, leaders who are intentionally unwise with their finances and that of others among many other things All of these things have been named among man since the beginning of time and will not end any time soon. Having the privilege of living in the 21st century does make any of these things less inconsistent with our Oath and Law.

Well, I do expect change is on its way as you say. We shall see what this change will bring us..
