Dauphin standoff suspect tries to avoid jail time

statepolicebadgeA Dauphin County man is hospitalized after he shot himself in the arm Monday morning just hours before he was scheduled to be sentenced for burglary charges. State police were called to a home along the 200 block of Erie Street in Dauphin Borough for a man threatening suicide.

Alan Shearer, 55, was due in York County court for sentencing today–but instead he grabbed a rifle and told his wife he didn’t want to go to jail.

That’s when the wife called 911.

State police arrived at the scene and were able to get the wife out of the house safely. Negotiations ensued for about 45 minutes until a shot went off.

Troopers say Shearer had shot himself in the left bicep with a rifle.

He was taken to Hershey Medical Center for treatment. He is expected to survive.

Last time I looked, burglary was a felony. He was convicted. How did he have access to a rifle? Existing law was NOT ENFORCED.
