(CNN) — The asteroid 2012 DA14 has made its closest approach to Earth, at a distance of about 17,200 miles above the planet’s surface, NASA says.

At the time of its closest approach to Earth, at approximately 11:25 am PST (2:25 pm EST/19:25 UTC), the asteroid will be about 17150 miles (27600 kilometers) above Earth’s surface.
