Chester Man Charged With Attempted Murder of Toddler Daughter

A Chester man is charged with the attempted murder after he allegedly savagely beat his 26 month old daughter. Hector Charles Garcia, 23, of Chester, was babysitting his daughter in Reading on the night of March 17, 2010. Emergency responders were sent to a residence on Spring Street for a report of a choking or unresponsive child.

The little girl was eventually transported to Hershey Medical Center, where she nearly died on the operating table. She had severe injuries: a massive brain injury, ligament twisting in her neck, her pancreas was nearly torn in two and she had eight rib fractures.

Her doctor did not believe the child’s injuries were accidental. The injuries were a classic shake and slam case, meaning the child was shaken and slammed against something or into or onto something.

Today, the child is blind and will never walk. She is completely care dependant.

Detectives learned that Hector Charles Garcia was babysitting the child while the biological mother was at work. These injuries occurred during the time the child was in the custody and care of Garcia.

Garcia was arrested on February 19, 2013 and charged with Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder of the First Degree, Aggravated Assault, Simple Assault and Endangering the Welfare of Children. He is currently in Berks County Prison in lieu of $200,000 bail.
