By Ashley Fantz, (CNN) — A nationally noted education leader in Mississippi who was also running for mayor of Clarksdale has been found dead, authorities said Thursday.
Marco McMillian’s body was discovered Wednesday morning near a levee between Sherard and Rena Lara, two unincorporated communities about 15 minutes away from Clarksdale.
But his car, which was wrecked, was found in Clarksdale, police said. Another person, Lawrence Reed, was inside the vehicle, law enforcement said.
Reed, 22, has been arrested, but has not been charged, authorities tell CNN.
McMillian received the 2009 Thurgood Marshall Prestige Award from the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. In 2004, Ebony magazine recognized him as one of the country’s top leaders under 30 years old. There’s a picture of McMillian posing with President Barack Obama on McMillian’s Facebook page.
McMillian’s body has been taken to Jackson, Mississippi, for an autopsy, according to the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office.
