Driver crashes into Susquehanna River during police chase in York County

A police chase ended Sunday morning with a vehicle crashing into the Susquehanna River in York County. Authorities spotted a green minivan, which was reported stolen from Victory Cab Company of Bel Air Maryland,  driving with a flat tire in  Springettsbury Township around 10:30 a.m.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the 23-year-old driver took off and headed north on I-83. He exited the interstate near Newberry and continued the chase onto Cly Road.

The chase came to an end when the suspect crashed the minivan into the Susquehanna River behind a marina along the first block of South River Street. The driver was able to get out  and swim to shore as the vehicle sank. Police at the scene tell FOX43 News that before the vehicle went under–the driver was sitting on top of it naked.

According to 911 dispatchers,  the suspect was wanted out of Maryland for robbing a convenience store. The minivan was reported stolen during an armed carjacking out of Maryland but it remains unclear whether the suspect played a role in the carjacking.
