Middletown resident scares off burglar, suspect at large

homebreakin

Police in Middletown are investigating an attempted burglary at a home along the 1000 block of Spruce Street overnight. The residents were asleep inside when they heard a screen door open and went to investigate. The suspect was scared off by the homeowner and was last seen running down Spruce Street where they disappeared in the area of East Roosevelt Avenue.

The person did not steal any items from the home.

Authorities found damage to the door’s double pane glass where the burglar smashed it with a tool or hard object.

Police remind residents to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity in their neighborhood to 717-558-6900.

As always–keep doors and windows locked at night when away from your home!

Ms. Waltz. If it was one burglar then HE ran down the street and disappeared. It is THEY when it is more than one burglar. Professionals do not make that kind of mistake.

I keep hammering on that, too. Why are these very short news paragraphs by a professional staff so poorly written and not proofread? Are they typing the stories in on a cellphone keyboard?

    AI P
You assumed that the burglar was a "HE".

That's true but typical to be a "he". A "she" would very much be highlighted. However, as you indicate, it probably would be proper to say "they" if the sex is not known. I do not know the proper convention in this case. Nevertheless, I stand by what I say that a professional news organization should be proofreading the single or double paragraph stories they are publishing.

"running down Spruce Street" and "disappeared i….."

It was neither "they" nor "he."

Hmm, was he/she scared? We don't know. But the intruder fled.
