Construction crews at around 7 a.m. on Monday, March 11, will close the bridges that carry Tower Road over Interstate 81 in East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County. Tower Road is officially designated as State Route 1037. There are actually two bridges that carry Tower Road over I-81 – one structure over northbound I-81 and another structure over southbound I-81. These bridges carry nearly 1,000 vehicles a day.
Motorists will be detoured around the bridge closures by way of Valley Road (SR 1004), 1st Street (SR 1019), Miller Street, and Belle Vista Drive.
PennDOT has contracted with J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Pennsylvania, at a cost of $517,131 to conduct what is known as bridge preservation work on the two structures carrying Tower Road over I-81. This work includes the replacement of expansion dams (i.e., metal bridge joints), deck repairs, a latex overlay, and minor repairs to the superstructure and substructure. The intent of bridge preservation work is to extend the service life of each bridge. The bridges should remain closed for two months. The entire project should wrap up by the end of May.
