The death of a young woman at the Lancaster Court Apartments has shocked the neighborhood.

“It’s just mind boggling to me that this can happen so close to home,” said Elizabeth Nazario, who lives in the complex.

Police were called to the apartment complex around 4:40 a.m. Saturday for a report of gunshots. Officers arrived to find 21-year-old Shadae Taylor-Brooks shot to death in a third floor unit.

Officers also found a 35-year-old man in the hallway with gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. Police say the two lived in the apartment where the shooting took place.

“There’s no reason for someone to die. I mean, that close by. There’s no reason for it,” said Dennis Johnson, who lives next door to the unit where the shooting happened.

Johnson said he had heard strange sounds coming from the apartment during the last week.

“The last couple of days there’s been banging on the walls, which I never heard before,” he said.

As police continue working to figure out what exactly took place, neighbors say they’re waiting anxiously until someone is held accountable.

“All day I’ve been kind of scoping it out. There’s a lot of kids that live around here and it used to be a very quiet neighborhood. Then all of a sudden this happens,” said Jennifer Shellenberger, who lives across the street.
