IRS: Millions in unclaimed Tax Refunds

If you didn’t file your 2009 federal tax return, you could be missing out on a pretty large refund.

The Internal Revenue Service says it has $917 million in unclaimed tax refunds from 2009, as more than 984,000 taxpayers haven’t submitted returns for that year.

The IRS estimates roughly half of the unclaimed refunds amount to more than $500 per person.

And time to submit your return is running out. You have until April 15, 2013 to file. If you miss that deadline, your money will be handed over to the US Treasury.

The good news though, is that there will be no late filing penalty if you are owed a refund.
