Update: Police dog Zeke expected to make full recovery

After surgery this morning, Harrisburg Police K-9 Zeke is expected to make a full recovery. Veterinarians operated on Zeke this morning and while it took longer than expected, they were able to patch him up.

Veterinarian Sabrena Meyerhoff said the surgery took slightly longer than anticipated because there was more trauma in Zeke’s neck than originally anticipated.

I hope the police department has the sense to place Zeke in less active duty if not retire him for his trauma. He has earned it.

This is exactly why these K-9 cops need bullet and stab proof vests too. They protect us and the officers, so they should be protected also. I wish you a speedy recovery Zeke and hope you can go back to what you love doing safely. <3

Police dogs should be badged officers and criminals who hurt or kill them should receive the same punishment as if they did it to a human officer!!!!!

Was the suspect also life lined? Has it been determined whose bullet actually shot the dog? If the suspected was cornered in a house by a police officer how did he get out? Remember innocent until proven guilty. Concerned citizen!

Read the stories and watch the news reports.
The police began shooting after the suspect shot the dog is my recollection of the reported sequence of events. There is standard protocol to investigate whose bullets went where.

Am I the only one wondering why we have heard nothing else about this incident other then how the dog is doing? There is an entire story being missed here as if they only want the public to focus on the dog vs the real story which would show that the police handled this incident extremely poorly. Their arrogance cost a child his life. What’s worse? They knew they were chasing a child and not a hardened criminal and chose to go for the kill versus a more rational standoff that could have resulted in a peaceful end for everyone – even the dog. That dog – practically still a puppy himself – was hurt due to a miscalculation by his handler.

Anonymous you are an idiot !! The story here is, you shoot at the police (YES a K-9 is an officer) you are going to get shot. …"the police handled this incident extremely poorly."…again a stupid statement. The police will let you know they are going to send the dog if you don't comply. He could have surrendered when they served him the warrant, yet he chose to flee and remain armed.
The ONLY person that cost this man (20 yrs old IS an adult !!) his life was HIM by his actions. "Not a hardened criminal" ? REALLY ? He shot and stabbed somebody the night before. The police had EVERY right to assume he was dangerous.
The criminal chose to fire at the police and they have EVERY right to return fire in defense.
The story is the well being and recovery of the brave K-9 because you can only put "Suspect is dead." so many times.

okay the real idiot is you. dont disrespect the man whose dead. how shallow are you? were you there that night? no. i was so i know what happened i know the man who was killed and hes the best man i have ever met in my life and i will never meet someone like skyler. he may have been a criminal but he had a heart. a beautiful one at that. so dont write this thinking you know all the facts because you sure as hell dont. RIPsky<33 loved by so many and made an impact on every single person he met.

Sorry for your loss Lizzie but if this is the best man you ever met, you really need to surround yourself with a better group of people. After stabbing and shooting one individual the day before, this man decided to evade arrest when the police came to serve the warrant. He then CHOSE to fire his weapon at the POLICE OFFICER (Zeke) and then refused again to surrender and drop his weapon when other POLICE OFFICERS instructed. Sometimes it is better to just give up, get a lawyer and let all the facts come out. If you CHOOSE not to do so, then you might end up as this young man did…

"loved by so many and made an impact on every single person he met."….like the guy he stabbed and shot at the night before, the K-9 officer he shot, the police he ran from, the previous people whom he burglarized ? A long rap sheet at 20 yrs old ? Where do you meet men?..visiting day at Camp Hill Correction ?
Lizzie…don't tell me I don't know the facts until you know who I know !!!!
If you were there that night, why didn't you tell him to do what the police instructed him to do ? Maybe you could have saved his life !!!

the dog did not have a gun to protect himself from a guy who was shooting a gun near a school, thank goodness the policeman did.

are you serious people? a man is dead and all anybody wants to talk about is a dog who was shot and taken in life line while skyler the man who was shot was taken in an ambulance. this world is so inhumane and i pray to god you sick people will see what is real and what this story really is. Because none of you who have anything bad to say about sky knew him or the situation so why make negative comments about a man who is dead. thats just down right disrespectful. you all make me sick. RIPSKY touched everyone he met. had a beautiful heart, body, mind, and soul.

Make up your mind first you say he was a chiild than you say a man. Whatvever it was he he needs to be if he thought nothing of harming others he is/was a coward. Zeke is more worthy to exist imagine a dog having better morals. Chew on that IDIOTS.

As usual, the friends and family of the lowlife thug who stabbed someone in a bar, pulled a gun on police, ran from the police, and shot at the police want to blame the police for doing their job. They hold the thug (Skylar in this case) as a hero. In doing so, they fail to see the real story and that is their friend/loved one attempted to murder two people…a person in a bar and a police officer. Hats off to EMS for flying the fallen officer to a trauma center! I am sorry the families loss of their "beloved" skylar, but maybe you should use this as a lesson to teach the surviving members of your family how to obey laws and respect the police!
