Man who shot Harrisburg Police K-9 Zeke is identified

We now know the name of the man killed by police in Dauphin County Friday night.

Dauphin County DA Ed Marsico confirms 20-year-old Skyler Stewart was the suspect being sought by police in Lower Paxton Township.

Stewart shot Harrisburg K-9 officer Zeke in the neck, and was then shot and killed by police.

Zeke underwent surgery and is doing well. He is expected to be released from the emergency veterinary clinic this week.

Forget that “DOG” the only thing tragic about this situation is a “HUMAN BEING” lost their life.

A human being lost HIS life. "Their" is simply poor English. However, that human being gave up his life when he chose crime. He had a choice. That is what is tragic

A human CHOSE to lose his life. You shoot at a K9, that's just asking to get shot. The other tragic thing is that there are other people like you think that way.

And no. Don't forget that "dog." That "dog" has more courage than you do.

Eugh. People like you disgust me.

NO NATHAN' HE LOST THAT RIGHT. He chose his actions therefore he is no longer a 'human being' You stupid little boy! Forget that A-hole who shot that dog' The ONLY thing tragic about this situation is that 'No other animal abusers died with him! If you choose the actions, you choose the consequences. That "human pig" got exactly what he deserved. All animal abusers should be SHOT. I would be more than happy to put my hand up. The world has one less piece of scum in it, Now how can that be tragic?

That person shot a police officer that DOG is a police officer on duty the suspect Im sure was requested to come out of the area with his hands up several before the handler sent Zeke in,upon refusing to do so Zeke was sent in ,the suspect chose to shoot Zeke and or any other officer that would have been going in after him. Im sure he had every opportunity to give himself up, before this happened. He the suspect was the one who fired the shots, not the officers,FIRST, the suspect got exactly what he deserved . Yes lose of Life happened but it was the suspects choice not the dogs choice of the outcome. Thank God Zeke came out of it ok.

For too long in this country criminals have been receiving all the rights! This young man was a criminal, the commited some crime and was being pursued by the police. I'm sure he could have surrendered at some point but did not and in the course of this event, he shot and killed a police dog. Now if you know anything at all about service dogs, they are treated as members of the force, whether it be military or police here at home. To shoot one of them is the same as shooting one of the other team members…in fact worse as the animal is not likely to be carrying a firearm…this young man was an idiot to do what he did and was at fault for his own death…

Skyler was my brother and even if he shot a cop dog that does not give the right to over shoot him and plus he did not fire at them and plus aren't the dogs supposed to be on a leash what else is he going to do

        Anonymous said:
        March 18, 2013 at 6:18 PM

I'm so sorry you lost your brother. This is tragic. To answer your question, though, "what else is he going to do," the answer is you don't run from police. If they order you to stop, you stop. I live near there and the number of police cars was huge. He heard those sirens, too. Where was he going to go? Shoot someone and take their car? The police could've shot him right away. They didn't and sent the dog. Once he started firing his gun (which he had illegally) do you really think he wasn't going to shoot that police officer he saw when he ran out of the woods? Again, I'm very sorry it ended this way.

Just so you understand the lease law does not apply to working dogs. How is a K-9 suppose to do his job if he's on a lease? That's just your ignorance talking. I'm sorry you lost your brother but He Chose A Life Of Crime. He shot an Officer–yes Zeke is an Officer of the law–who was sent in to try and apprehend the suspect without using lethal force. Your brother chose to do what he did and unfortunately paid for it with his life.

This " Dog " first off has a name like the rest of us! He did not volunteer to become a police officer, he was chosen, even as humans, most of us would never choose such a dangerous profession. He did his job, right along with all the other police offiers and unfortunately was shot in his line of duty. That is the tragic part. He was simply trying to stop this person from killing more people. The man who shot him, chose to bear that gun and use that gun on a police officer. When you make bad choices, you stand to suffer bad consequences. Have some respect for this injured officer, whether a canine or human, what difference does it make?

The Suspect was not shot because he shot the dog, he was shot becuase he refused to follow the officers commands to drop his weapon…
Maybe if he had not stabbed the individual the day before and if he had done as he was ordered by the police, he would not be dead right now…

In most cases, a criminal who would shoot a police dog has absolutely no hesitation about shooting the handler with the dog; i.e. another police officer. Would you as the handler want to wait and see if the guy shoots you, too? I didn't think so……

Some people make me sick. Like the person that said forget the dog. He isn't just a dog, he is a police officer, and if that idiot wasn't doing something wrong in the first place none of this would have ever happened. i am happy that the dog is doing well now and getting better, and this might sound rude, but that human being deserved what he got. I dont understand why people have to break the law in the first place. It's not that hard to get through life without getting into trouble. And the person that said he should've been on a leash, HELLO……………………….he is a police officer you jerk, he doesn't need to be on a leash. If the person wouldn't have done anything wrong, then he would still be here. So the people that agree that the human was right in all this and feel bad for him, get a life. Because the police officers were just doing their jobs.

I wish we lived in a society without knives as weapons, or guns. Then Skyler would still be alive, the stabbed person would still be okay, and Zeke would not have a bullet wound in his neck. I don't know what was going on with Skyler but it seemed like a pretty bad streak of criminal behavior he was suddenly engaged in. Maybe it was not typical of him. He was very young to die and I'm sure the cop who shot him is traumatized about it, too. This is sad all around.

Ya know what really makes me ill , that we have nothing better to do then make assumptions on a very tragic event that took a life . We have no idea what was wrong with this man . He may have been on antidepressants that cause violence in a lot of people. I blame the FDA for releasing dangerous drugs to people that really don't need them . If you look at the crime rates 9 out of 10 are young men on psychotropic medications and they explained that it was like a dream and they couldn't stop it. When we start putting the blame where it belongs and treat these issues without these harmful drugs we will see an improvement in the way young men act. I believe that some people need this treatment however they are not monitored properly by their doctors and they don't get the counseling they desperately need .

      Anonymous said:
      March 20, 2013 at 6:24 AM

He was still able to get a gun though. No mandatory background checks and, as we have seen in so many tragedies, being seriously mentally ill does not prevent someone legally acquiring a gun in the USA. The US has some serious decisions to make about "the right to bear arms".

      Anonymous said:
      March 20, 2013 at 11:47 AM

I take offense to you blaming antidepressants for someone's criminal behavior. You said, "We have no idea what was wrong with this man." Your right, We don't. So for you to go off on a tangent about prescription drugs causing his behavior is just stupidity on your part. If he was on some type of Psychiatric medication he should have been monitored for any bad side effects. I have taken medication for years now for depression and the only time I hear about people becoming violent while taking them is when they are
caught breaking the law and they will use any excuse to justify what they did,

I think some people are missing the point. This man had a gun and was obviously prepared to use it. After the dog, the police were next and possibly any members of the public who got in his way. That's the bigger picture here.

Chloe, I agree, though lots of people I'm sure will disagree with my next point: guns were the problem, here. Both Skyler's, and the police's. If this had happened in Britain, probably the fight would have been worse, but I'll bet anything that Skyler would still be alive. You don't go around thinking about shooting police dogs or police officers or anyone at all if you don't have a gun. I wish the police had tried using a taser, first, or tried shooting Skyler in the leg (away from major arteries). A death could have been avoided, but this kind of thing all happens so fast, and the cop would have had to be an excellent sharp shooter under extreme stress–that's a tall order. Skyler was obviously scared of being arrested but if he hadn't had a gun, he'd still be alive. I don't blame the police. Why didn't he just surrender? Will we ever know? Black Jack, I don't know if he was on psychoactive medication, but side effects can for sure affect judgment. Twenty years old. Sad, sad, sad.

Guns don't kill people , people kill people !!!! Its people like you that believe in disbarment. that are a curse to a nation. SERIOUSLY!?!?!?! Im fat because of spoons better get rid of spoons then huh?!?!?! Be real if we had good health care that was available to everyone even with pre existing conditions then maby this could be prevented. And if it had not been a gun it could have been a crowbar a knife etc , the officer still would have shot him regardless .

        Anonymous said:
        March 20, 2013 at 12:05 PM

I am so sick and tired of people comparing guns to spoons, and matches, and junk food, etc! If you're fat because he can't control your eating habits that is your own fault and no one else gets hurt from your behavior but yourself! Yes a match can start a forest fire but it takes time for a fire to be considered a threat to human life. Any other weapon besides a gun has to be used in close physical contact with the victim. To beat a person to death usually takes more than one blow and again you have to be close enough to that person in order to hit them. However when using a gun you can shoot from far distances–depending on the gun–and kill with one shot. I am not against owning a gun for protection but guns that are made for nothing other than to kill human beings need to be banned!
To Guest-Too… To use a Taser on a man with a gun would be pure stupidity. Police officers are taught if they have to shoot then shoot to kill. Their lives are in immediate danger. If they shot him somewhere that was not aimed to kill he could have very easily used his gun to shoot back. As far as I'm concerned if all the facts of this case are correct the officers were just doing their duty, and putting their lives on the line to protect law-abiding citizens.

Tell me a gun made that cannot kill a human being, And if guns were banned do you believe for one minute just one that a person who wanted to shoot someone would not go on the streets and buy one,any day of the week any time, You and anyone else are ever going to stop idiots from buying guns and shooting people if that is there intent. Back in the 70s when I was growing up no body shot anyone else,we went out to the back yard or school yard and duked it out, nobody locked there doors at night, most people left there keys in there car at night, Do that now days never,This is a different world we live in today, and if you are not willing to adjust to this time table you will be the loser, not the bad guy because he don;t care, they don;t care if they kill you dosent faze them in the least, Its a scary world out there and if you don;t protect yourself no one else is, I blame two things here. first the lack of discipline parenting if we pulled any of this crap when we were kids we got out butts kicked, you didnt do it again , the gov. Teachers that cant control the kids at school because you cant touch me I call the police, thats why you have total loss of control of the kids now days lack of parenting and lack of Teachers to control the kids at school. the Kids can do anything they want to now and with the judicial system filled up and everybody is let out extremely early and sentences are reduced greatly there back out on the streets allmost before the paperwork is done.Just ask a cop . You better wake up and smell the coffe because it is a total different flavor no days.
