Father posts picture of his son holding a rifle; DYFS tries to take his son

A New Jersey dad posts a picture of his son holding a .22 caliber rifle that looks like an assault rifle, but is not.

Police came with DYFS (New Jersey’s Department of Youth and Family Services) without a warrant and demanded to see his firearm collection.

The father refused and told them to leave, because they had no warrant.

Do you think it was ok for the father to post the picture? Was it ok for police to ask to search his firearm collection? Comment below:

No ,they have no right to see the guns there was no crime committed. Only people over reacting to a photo. From what I read the officers went way beyond their authority in this case.I'm glad the father had the sense to call a lawyer to reaffirm that it was within his rights to refuse to do what the police wanted when they had o warrant.

Absolutely OK, obviously he has been trained in the safe handling of fire arms. Finger off the trigger and pointed in a safe direction. The Police were obviously not in the right and over reacted. If they thought they thought there had been a crime committed they would not have needed a warrant or would have come prepared with one. The Father was well within his rights to take this picture and post it anywhere he wanted and more importantly to deny an unlawful search by a bunch of anti-gun bullies! .

Maybe not in the best interest with current event.but I don't see a problem with the photo.people has the anti assault rifle thing so far up there tight ass.im sure they didn't even really look at the gun.they just looked and reacted.
Guns don't kill people.neither do automobile.only the operators do

I don't see anything wrong with this picture. The boy is dressed in camo, and is probably a mini me of his father, and there is nothing wrong with that at all. You can tell by the smile on his face that the young man in the picture is tickled pink. I grew up in a family of hunters, and this picture would have been the norm back in the day. The Dad in this story probably shouldn't have put the photo on Facebook or whatever social media he used. DYFS went over the top, and that is becoming the norm with all government agencies in this country, not the exception. Dad was definitely within his rights to refuse to allow DYFS into his home without a search warrant. Shame on DYFS for not really looking at the picture and realizing that the boy wasn't in any danger, and that he was happy, not terrorized.

Nothing wrong with this pic. Ppl really need to start minding their own business. They do not have a right to ask the father to see his gun collection. That's none of their business. Good for him for refusing. They're lucky that's all he did. I may not of been so nice.

I don't think it right. Ever since Sandy Hook we have been trying to band assault weapons because we are afraid that another tragedy like Sandy Hook it going to happen again. We as Americans don't know how to cope with tragedy. And another tragedy like it is going to happen again. I think the son looks cute. Maybe he wants to be in the Army.

As long as there is good and evil in this world there will all ways be a tragedy like Sandy Hook. My heart still cries out for that tragedy and others like it. My heart also cries out to the families of the 8 Marines killed during a training accident. I hope you posted on that news story as well. This father did nothing wrong as a matter of fact he shows what good things he has done. 1) Straight Trigger Finger= Weapon Safety Training. 2) He is proud of his son and wanted a photo of him. No crime in that.
The police and the Children Services went way out of bounds.

How stupid – it is NOT an assault rifle. An assault rifle is an actual military weapon. They are used throughout the world and defined as such!

If the American people pulled together, they could over come junk such as this. But as long as we sit on our butts and do nothing but complain, it WILL continue, and it WILL get worse. Just like when they said one woman cann't take the bible out of the school system. Well guess what, she pulled it off, all while the American people just stood by and TALKED about it, doing absolutely NOTHING. WATCH OUT PEOPLE, THERE IS MORE OF THIS TYPE OF THING ON THE WAY !!!!!!!!

I'm not a gun nut. I side with more gun control AND a responsible interpretation of the 2nd amendment. That said, I will say there is nothing wrong with posting this picture and there is something wrong with the police and the NJ government overreacting to this picture.

Its not right at all, my daughters are 13 and 10 and they hunt. Both of them 2 years ago got deer. If they don't like the picture of the boy holding the gun don't look at it. They are getting horrible with all of this. Just because some one went on a rampage, then the government want to take everyone's guns. I take pride in my daughters and my son being able to use guns in hunting. I have pictures of them with guns up on my facebook page is someone gonna turn me in for them..people need to mind their own

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this picture. He is not killing anyone, nor is the gun aimed at anyone. He is properly holding the gun with his finger OFF of the trigger. These people who are trying to further push a stricter gun law are seriously overstepping their boundaries.

Some people seem to feel the need to stick their nose in other's business, they need to relax! No harm in this picture, many of us were brought up learning how to handle guns safely.

Hell yeah its okay. This kid probably loves the time with his dad shooting, hunting and learning the safety issues. It's a lot better than him playing grand theft auto!!!!!

They're willing to take away a child that's lucky enough to spend quality time with his parents. And lucky enough to have parents that love him, and are sharing their pride with everyone they can. Shame on DYFS!!! I'm sure there's a stack of folders, with children that are constantly abused, on their desks that got shoved aside for this!!! And I totally agree with your statement about grand theft auto. So many parents don't even take the time to KNOW if something their child is watching or playing is unacceptable!!!

An over-reaction to the picture … but proof that a gun isn't necessary to defend yourself against the evil government that's coming to take your guns – just ask if they have a warrant and let the law take it's course.
And yes, automobiles don't kill people – operators do. But we legislate the *hell* out of automobiles and what it takes to get behind the wheel and drive one. I have no problem with doing the same with guns.

The picture is perfectly fine. If the government thinks there is a problem with it, than me and most of my buddies are guilty for posting pictures of our kids shooting guns at the gun range. But why are they complaining about this picture? What about all the idiots on UTube having a "virgin" gun shooter, shoot a .12 guage shotgun that knocks them on their butt, or them shooting a Dessert Eagle doing the same thing? To me, this is more serious. In fact I've seen a video on Utube of a guy shooting a pumkin that was sitting on his buddies head. It doesn't get much more stupid than that. But, hey, since when does the government use logic?

Maybe people should THINK before they post something! Was the father trying to attract attention? Is the son doing this because he made the decision? The fact that is was a 22 caliber and not what it appears makes me think that the father was just trying to stir up trouble. Do we know who called children and youth? I think there are far more questions here rather than answers! And who of us have a lawyer on speed dial?

Nothing wrong with that picture, people should mind their own business. The police should have known there was nothing wrong with the picture. "Hunt with your kids and you won't have to hunt for them".
