An anonymous bidder paid nearly $1 million for the engagement ring Napoleon Bonaparte gave his first wife, Josephine. The French emperor conquered much of Europe, then lost it, about 200 years ago. His love for Josephine is legendary. He wrote passionate letters to her from the battlefield. Napoleon is believed to have given her the ring in 1796. They married soon afterward on March 9.
Other items were also auctioned, including a portrait of Napoleon’s son was also auctioned.
