A 51-year-old man is behind bars after leading state police on a high-speed chase that spanned two states and reached speeds of 120 miles per hour early Friday morning. Bernard Johnson, of Baltimore, Maryland, is facing numerous charges including receiving stolen property, DUI and fleeing and eluding.
It all began around 1:19 a.m when troopers spotted Johnson driving erratically while operating a 2002 Chrysler Town and Country in the southbound lanes of I-83 near the Leader Heights Exit in York Township. The vehicle had been reported stolen from Baltimore, MD, according to state police reports.
Johnson sped off when troopers attempted to pull him over. Spike strips were deployed during the chase in an effort to slow Johnson down but he kept on going.
The chase came to an end when Johnson attempted to get off the interstate in Cockeysville, Maryland. He lost control of the stolen vehicle while going around a curve and went off the road into an embankment. After crashing, Johnson attempted to flee from authorities on foot but was quickly apprehended.
He was taken York County Prison.
Maryland State Police assisted in the chase.
