York City lost an accomplished leader on Friday with the passing of former mayor Elizabeth Marshall. She was 94.

Marshall was the city’s first female mayor after being elected in 1977.  She remained active in the Democratic Party until her death.

“Mayor Marshall will forever remain a lasting memory to the people of York County,” said Democratic Party of York County Chair Bob Kefauver. “Whether they realize it or not, the citizens of York County will be always watched over by Mayor Marshall each spring when the beautiful trees which line Market Street bloom. Mayor Marshall was instrumental in getting these trees planted, forever leaving her mark on this city.”

Marshall had been battling a long time illness.
