The Adam Taliaferro Resiliency Award is named after the Penn State football player who was tragically paralyzed during a game.

Doctors said he would never walk again but he overcame the odds and has led a successful life as an attorney and motivational speaker.

This year’s award recipient was Central York High’s senior Cody Lehmann. The senior was born with a rare condition called “Niikawa Kuroki Syndrome” or also know as “Kabuki Syndrome” threatening his life at a young age.

Cody has undergone 17 surgeries including open heart surgery and placed on a feeding tube for close to two years.

On Monday, Lehmann’s school surprised him with the Adam Taliaferro Resiliency Award. Despite all his struggles, Cody was still a manager for the football, basketball and baseball teams throughout his high school career.

Former Penn State wrestler Rohan Murphy was the speaker at this event. Murphy has no legs but showed the students they can overcome the odds as long as you don’t make excuses when trying to reach their goals.

Cody says he hopes to continue to stay in the sports  world after graduation, he would like to be a coach or a job in television sports broadcasting.
