Preparations begin April 15 on a project to widen and reconstruct a 4,143-foot section of Route 124 in Springettsbury and York Townships, York County.
The $3,243,939 contract was awarded on Feb. 11 to Hempt Bros., Inc. of Camp Hill, Cumberland County, and includes building demolition, coordinated utility relocation, roadway widening and reconstruction to accommodate two lanes of traffic in each direction with a center-turn lane, drainage improvements, curb and sidewalk installation, resurfacing and new traffic lines.
PennDOT advises travelers that starting April 15 they may encounter single lane restrictions weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. with flaggers directing traffic through the work zone as crews prepare for phased construction.
Motorists are advised to be alert for this operation, to obey work zone signs, and to slow down when approaching and traveling through work zones, not only for their safety, but for the safety of the road crews. To avoid delays, travelers should allow for additional time in their plans or seek an alternate route.
Eventually traffic patterns will be shifted to accommodate a single-lane in each direction with a center-turn lane as crews widen and reconstruct Route 124 between Hartford Road and Route 24.
This section of Route 124 averages 23,938 vehicles traveled daily.
This is the third of five sections of Route 124 to be reconstructed through Springettsbury, York and Windsor townships.
PennDOT began work last spring to widen the section of Route 124 just east of I-83 and to also realign a curve on Route 124 in Windsor Township. A project to improve the Route 124 intersection with Route 24 is scheduled to begin in late 2013 followed by the reconstruction of the I-83 interchange with Route 124 at Exit 18.
PennDOT expects work on this section to be completed with final paving in spring 2015.
