Fetus found in high school bathroom

A Lancaster County high school student is charged with having baby in high school bathroom and attempting to drown it.

Cherlie LaFleur19-year-old Cherlie LaFleur is behind bars on Wednesday night after investigators say she delivered a baby in a bathroom, tried to drown the child and then threw it away in the trash.

In his years working as the Lancaster Coroner, Dr. Stephen Diamantoni has never had to deal with this type of case before.

“This is the first time this has occurred,” says Dr. Diamanroni, “I have been the coroner for over five years and this is the first fetus we have found at a high school.”

A McCaskey East janitor discovered a male fetus in a garbage can in a girls bathroom around 10 o’clock on Tuesday night.

Police determined the fetus belonged to LaFleur of Lancaster who was a student at the high school. The fetus was about 27 weeks along, the coroner says the baby being born outside a hospital didn’t help its chance to live.

“The situations that are not ideal,” says Dr. Diamantoni, “babies that are born outside the hospital without benefit of trade personal, the prognosis for those kids are very grave.”

LaFleur has been charged with Concealing the Death of a Child, her bail is set for one million dollars.

This is what happens when young females feel there is no other option for them. Same thing happened before Roe v. Wade: teenage girls delivering premature babies and throwing them away or giving themselves at home abortions using coat hangers that left them sterile for life. Don't believe it? Try being a registered nurse at a women's hospital in 1970 – the lengths women will go to in order to rid themselves of an unwanted baby are horrendous. Society needs to reduce the stigma associated with abortion and not pass judgment on these young girls. Maybe then situations like this will become more infrequent.

or set up proper adoption methods for the future. I am sure there is a family out there that would have loved to adopt this now deceased baby. :(

The problem is many of these young girls are too afraid/ashamed to let anyone know of their pregnancy, which is the reason they resort to such methods. Its difficult to hide a pregnancy for 9 months in order to give it up for adoption. I'm sure most of these young girls wished they could do that, but because of their circumstances they don't. I just feel its best not to judge until you've walked a mile in their shoes. It's these preconceived judgments that cause many girls the most shame.

Yes, let's just murder the baby inside the womb. That is much more humane and indicative of a civilized society.

Eh, you are prejudging the released information and not considering that Fox43 has not been reliable on publishing facts.

Okay,19 and still in school… that answers the intelligence level. Kids went to do grown up things then get mad when they have grown up consequences. Let her be someone’s girlfriend in jail, fix her so she can never make and/or take life again

With all the options and help set up for this type of situation, this displays a lack of respect for human life. Am I surprised? NO! Should we be concerned, YES! If taxpayer funded abortion clinics can kill live birth infants, how can anyone expect better of a confused and frightened teenager. With all the counseling given to teenagers about abortion and birth control, why is there no counseling on adoption or even just a little respect for another human life. This lack of concern for an innocent life is abhorrent. It is sad to see that our children believe it is "OK" to kill a defenseless human being. Has anyone told these young people that taking a human life if wrong??? Parents, teachers, ministers?

This is ridiculous. I am ashamed to say I go to this school. I don’t understand. The teen parents rate at McCaskey is off the charts. There is so much help being offered to young moms and their babies. I know this because I have a newborn of my own that I adore. When you have nothing, McCaskey offers SOO many programs and resources that helps you have everything you need for yourself and your baby. I don’t understand how you can carry a blessing for that long inside of you and not grow such a strong bond. She’s a criminal. That’s EVIL.

lets keep in mind this was a 19 year old young girl… she was most likely scared to death and felt she had no other options. unless you know this young girl you don’t know enough about her to judge.. I am not saying what she did was ok or in any way right I just think that we shouldn’t judge her because we do not know all the circumstances surrounding this case.
