Some Make-A-Wish families hit the road today for the 12th annual Make-A-Wish truck convoy for wishes. The event kicked off in Gettysburg where more than 100 tractor trailers took the kids on a 50-mile journey.

The event serves as one of the foundations biggest fundraisers. The founder of Make-A-Wish, Frank Shankwitz, says the the whole idea began in 1980 with a 7-year old who wanted to be a highway patrol motorcycle officer. “He had a wish and we made that happen and he was the inspiration to start this whole foundation. And because of that one little boy, look what’s happening all over the United state and in fact, the world,” Shankwitz said.

Regional manager Ann Waltman was also on hand at today’s event. “It’s just such a great feeling, it’s a goosebump moment when you see all the kids waving out of the trucks and the drivers and the relationship they develop over the years. They get to know their drivers and they look for them every year. It’s just good to see them smile,” she said.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes to kids ages 2 and a half to 18 with life-threatening medical conditions. It has fulfilled more than 11,000 wishes since its start over 30 years ago.
