After the fiery tanker crash on Thursday in Dauphin County, crews are working day and night to remove damaged sections of a highway bridge and restore it, so that drivers can use Interstate 81 again.

It’s been affecting drivers coming through from across the country. Interstate 83 was a major detour route, with some moderate traffic delays.

“It was bumper to bumper on 83, delayed us half an hour,” says Joseph Bivone, who was taking I-81 north from Tennessee when he hit the detour.

Tricky work continues day and night on the bridges over I-81. Workers removed part of the burned section from the Route 22 East bridge and they’re building two median crossovers, to bring eastbound traffic over to a single lane on the westbound ramp towards Harrisburg.

“Our intent is to have that available to motorists by Monday morning, so in time for the commute,” says Greg Penny, spokesman for PENNDOT.

Penny says they are aiming to reopen Interstate 81 by Tuesday.
