2013 Memorial Day Events around Central Pa.

There’s a lot going on for the Memorial Day Holiday. We’ve compiled a list of events happening in your area.

  Adams County

• The Gettysburg Joint Veterans Memorial Day Commission parade will begin at 2 p.m. May 27. The parade starts on Lefever Street and ends at the Soldiers’ Memorial Cemetery. A ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. at the Rostrum where Gov. Tom Corbett, who is also the parade grand marshal, will speak.

Cumberland County

• Camp Hill American Legion Post 43 will hold a parade at 9:30 a.m. May 27 starting at North 19th and Market streets. Following the parade, a ceremony will be held at Camp Hill Cemetery behind the firehall starting at 11 a.m. In the event of bad weather, the service will be held in the borough building on Walnut St. After the parade the borough will offer games, food and information at Willow Park where the high school jazz band will be performing at 1 p.m. For more information call: Gary Lower at 717-329-4856 or Audrey Logar at 717-737-4548.
• The Joint Veterans Council of Carlisle will hold a parade May 27 starting at 9 a.m. After the parade, services will be held at the Veterans’ Memorial Courtyard at 9:45 a.m. In the event of bad weather, the parade is canceled and the ceremony will be moved to the old courthouse. • In Carlisle the American Legion Post 826 will hold a memorial service at Union Cemetery beginning at 11:30 a.m. May 27. The Cumberland County Honor Guard will provide a firing detail. • Lower Allen Township VFW Post 7530 will hold a program at 11 a.m. May 27 at the post headquarters, 4545 Westport Drive. The program will feature guest speaker Army Col. Keith S. Lostroh, USAWC class of 2013. For more information call: David Barninger at 717-731-0671.
• Mechanicsburg Area Veterans Council will hold a parade at 10 a.m. May 27 followed by a ceremony at Mechanicsburg Cemetery on Marble Street at 11 a.m. If bad weather arises, the ceremony will be held in the VFW Post 6704, 4907 Carlisle Pike. For more information call: Paul Kreiner at 717-579-4560.
• The Vietnam Veterans of Mechanicsburg will hold a memorial service at 2 p.m. May 27 at Lincoln Colored Cemetery off Winding Hill Road. The service will be held rain or shine. For more information call: Paul Kreiner at 717-579-4560.
• The Joint Veterans Council of Newville will hold a parade at 1 p.m. May 27. Services will follow at the fountain at Veterans Memorial. In the event of bad weather, the parade will be canceled and services will be held at Big Spring Event and Activity Center, located at 2 Chestnut St. For more information call: Pat Reed at 717-776-7825.
• The Joint Veterans Council of Shippensburg will hold a ceremony at 10 a.m. May 27 at Locust Grove Cemetery. Following the ceremony will be services at Spring Hill Cemetery starting at 11 a.m. as well as a flag raising ceremony at Shippensburg Veterans Memorial Park at noon. At 1:15 p.m. the Navy Marine Memorial Service will be held at Branch Bridge on King Street. The parade begins at 2 p.m. at King and Prince streets. • Silver Spring Township Veterans Memorial Committee will hold a ceremony beginning at 11 a.m. May 27 at Willow Mill Park. The park is located at 80 Willow Mill Park Road, Mechanicsburg. For more information call: Clarence Bouchat at 717-691-7239.

Dauphin County

• The Marine Corps League kicks off its annual Memorial Day celebration May 27 at 8 a.m. by placing a wreath on the Susquehanna River at Front Street in Shipoke.  Harrisburg Mayor Linda Thompson, as well as state Rep. Patty Kim and state Sen. Rob Teplitz will speak at the event.
• Wiconisco Township is holding a 8 a.m. service on May 27 at the Honor Roll. The Williams Valley High School band will provide music and the Wiconisco Fire Company Honor Guard will present a rifle salute. Breakfast will follow in the firehall. Franklin County

• The Cumberland Valley 21 Day Retreat Organization and the American Legion Post 46 will host a parade beginning at 9:15 a.m. May 27 at Lincoln Way and East Fifth Ave. The procession will briefly pause at Memorial Square for a ceremony but then proceed to the Concococheague Creek to honor veterans who died at sea. In the event of inclement weather the ceremony will take place in the American Legion Post home, 755 Philadelphia Ave. at 10 a.m.
• The American legion Post 373 and VFW Post 6319 will be holding a parade and ceremony beginning at 10:30 a.m. May 27. The parade will start at Allison and Franklin streets and conclude at Cedar Hill Cemetery with a Memorial Day program at 11 a.m. The service will feature guest speaker Navy Cmdr. Sean P. Dalton.
• Cumberland Valley School of Music Band will perform a free patriotic concert May 27 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be held at the Kiwanis Band Shell in memorial Park, Chambersburg. In the event of bad weather the concert will be held at the Chambersburg Area Senior High School, 511 S. Sixth St.
• Parklawns Memorial Gardens will hold its annual Memorial Day service in the Freedom Garden area of the cemetery, 3218 Philadelphia Ave. The service starts at 1 p.m. May 27 and includes a military speaker, honor guard and refreshments. For more information call: 717-263-9125.
• American Legion Post 561 will host a ceremony May 27 at 10 a.m. The program will be held in Union Cemetery where Army Col. Brian J. McHugh will be guest speaking. Following the ceremony will be a wreath laying at Fulton County Courthouse.

Lebanon County

• The Jonestown parade and service on May 27 will begin with formation of the parade at 8:30 a.m. at the Swatara Bridge. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. The service will be at Zion’s Lutheran Cemetery starting at 9:45 a.m. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held at St. John’s UCC at 9. • The Lebanon Veterans Advisory Council will host a parade at 9:30 a.m. May 27 beginning on Cumberland Street. Veterans representing the Vietnam War era will lead the parade. After the parade, a ceremony will be held at Monument Park on Eighth and Lehman streets.
• Cornwall Manor will hold a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. May 27 in the Freeman Auditorium.

Lancaster County

• The United Veterans Council of New Holland is holding its Annual Pilgrimage on May 27, conducting services at 13 cemeteries in eastern Lancaster County. All veterans in eastern Lancaster County are invited to participate. The procession will kick off at 6:45 a.m. at the American Legion in New Holland and concludes with a Memorial Day ceremony at New Holland Community Memorial Park. Steve Loewen, a New Holland businessman, will be the guest speaker.
• Lancaster Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1690 will commemorate Memorial Day with a service at 9 a.m. May 27 held at Penn Square in Lancaster city. The service will be followed by a ceremony at Riverview Cemetery.
• Schoeneck will host its Memorial Day Parade starting at the firehall at 9 a.m May 27.
• The Lititz Parade begins at 10:30 a.m. May 27 on Warwick Street. The parade will conclude with a ceremony at Moravian Cemetery starting at 1 p.m.
• The Lititz American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1463 will host its annual events in the Lititz parade on May 27. At 5:30 p.m., the sixth annual Salute to Veterans will be held at Clipper Magazine Stadium featuring the Post’s color guard, the Marine Corps League, entertainment from the Manhattan Dolls and a World War II B25 bomber.
• Manheim Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5956 and American Legion Post 419 will host Manheim’s annual Memorial Day parade and program beginning at 9 a.m. May 27 at Veterans Memorial Park. The parade will conclude at Memorial Park where a ceremony will feature speakers and music.
• Denver’s annual parade will start at 9 a.m. May 27 at the Denver Fire Company Hall. A brief tribute service will take place at the cemetery on North 4th Street before the procession continues onto Walnut Street. The parade concludes with a Memorial Day service held at Denver Memorial Park.
• The Strasburg Area Sertoma Club, in cooperation with the former Paul R. Strubel Post No. 8710 VFW, will hold a parade at 9 a.m. May 27 beginning along Clearview Drive.  The parade will include floats, music and flags that pay homage to community veterans. Following the parade, a memorial service will be held at Strasburg Cemetery starting at 10:30 a.m.
• The Marietta Memorial Day Parade Committee will conduct its annual parade starting at 11 a.m. May 27. The parade will begin at Donegal Intermediate School and close at Marietta Cemetery, where a service will be held. The grand marshal is Richard Smedley, a WWII veteran. The guest speaker is Lt. Col. Douglas A. Etter, who served as chaplain for the 28th Infantry Division and is a veteran of two Operation Iraqi Freedom combat tours.
• The Bainbridge Band has two performances. The first is the Bainbridge Memorial Day Parade, where the band will lead off at 9 a.m. May 27. Later that day, the band will perform at the Maytown Memorial Day Parade at 5 p.m.
• American Legion Post 34 and Flowers by Paulette will team up to decorate the graves of veterans. The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. May 27 at Lancaster Cemetery, 205 E. Lemon St., and then move to St. Mary’s Cemetery. Guest speakers will be state Sen. Lloyd Smucker, state Rep. Ryan Aument and Judge Jeffery Wright of Veterans Court. At the event attendees will place one red rose on the headstone of every veteran after a 21-gun salute.
• The Village Grande at Millers Run, an adult lifestyle community in Lancaster, will host its sixth annual Memorial Day ceremony. The service will start at 9 a.m. May 27 and includes an invocation, flag ritual, singing of patriotic songs and an expression of honor for veterans. A reception will be held immediately following the ceremony inside the clubhouse. There will be an opportunity to contribute to the Wounded Warriors Project at the event.
• St. John’s Lutheran Church will hold a concert on May 27, titled Patriotic Musicale, at 7:30 p.m. at the church, 11 N. Queen St. in Maytown. The event features a small chorus accompanied by instruments and the Bainbridge Band performing American favorites. Strawberries and ice cream, as well as other refreshments will be available, with proceeds being divided between the patient activity fund for Lebanon VA Medical Center and the Maytown American Legion Post.
• The Wrightsville American Legion will host a number of festivities beginning with a breakfast at the Abel Poff Leitheiser Post 469 Home May 27 at 8 a.m. The annual parade will leave the Post Home at 2 p.m. and continue to the Fairview Cemetery for a memorial service. Following the ceremony, refreshments will be offered at the Post Home.

Perry County

• A service will be held at 10 a.m. May 27 in the ballroom of the Marysville Moose on Verbeke Street by the Marysville, Rye, Perdix Veteran’s committee.  A picnic-style luncheon will follow. At the event committee members will be selling patriotic items to help offset the shipping expenses when mailing care boxes to troops overseas. Supplies and donations are being collected including: hygiene products for men and women, sunscreen, lip balm, snacks, candy (no chocolate) drink mix, soups, canned meats, magazines, soft back books, protein bars, trail mix, chips, pretzels, playing cards, notebooks, pens, wet wipes and toilet paper.
• The New Bloomfield VFW Post 7463 parade and service will begin at 9 a.m. May 27. The parade forms at 8:30 a.m. at the borough building on East McClure Street. It will move through town ending at the cemetery for a service. In the event of bad weather, the parade is canceled and the service will be held in Carson Long Chapel at 10 a.m.

York County

•  York’s historic Prospect Hill Cemetery and Cremation Gardens will partner with the Fourth Day Divine Floral Design LLC, for the fresh flower display of 400 roses and candle light on the Fallen Heroes Memorial and Banner Display at Prospect Hill Cemetery and Cremation Gardens, 700 N. George St., York. This memorial will be displayed the evenings of May 24 through May 27 and the public is invited to participate by viewing the display.
• The York County Department of Veteran Affairs and the York County Commissioners will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. May 27. The program will be held at the Veterans Memorial Park. It will include the placing of wreaths on a memorial for deceased York County veterans, a salute to all U.S. veterans and conclude with taps and the firing of the volley.
• The Etters VFW celebration will be held at 10 a.m. May 27. The parade starts on Whisler Road traveling to Paddletown Road. Services will be held at 11 a.m. in the Christian Education Center, 355 Church Road. For more information call: Mike Wolfe at 717-938-8128.
• Wrightsville American Legion, Abel Poff Leitheiser Post 469, will be sponsoring an event beginning with breakfast at 8 a.m. May 27 at the Post Home on 2nd and Hellam streets. The annual Memorial Day parade will leave the Post Home at 2 p.m. proceeding west on Hellam Street to the Fairview Cemetery where it will conclude with a memorial service. The speaker will be Col. David J. Smoker, United States Air Force. Following the parade, refreshments will be served at the Post Home.
• Wellsville Frontier Days Inc., 75 Carroll St., Wellsville, will be hosting a Memorial Day Rodeo May 27 at 11 a.m. The rodeo includes bull riding, bronco riding, barrel racing, break-away calf roping and more.
• The York County Department of Veteran Affairs and the York County Commissioners will be hosting a Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. May 27 at the Veterans Memorial Park in York. Local military veterans will be recognized for their service. All military veterans, their friends, family and the public are invited. Springettsbury Township resident Richard Allan Witzke, a Vietnam War veteran, will be the guest speaker.
  
• Glen Rock American Legion Post 403 will hold its Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. May 27 at the church cemetery of Immanuel United Methodist Church, 1 New St., Glen Rock. Daryl A. Rinehart will be keynote speaker. Following the ceremony, the Auxiliary will serve refreshments at the American Legion Post located on Manchester Street. In the event of bad weather, the service will be held in the church.
• New Freedom VFW Post will sponsor a ceremony at 2 p.m. May 27 located at New Freedom Cemetery. The ceremony is open to the public. Following the ceremony, light refreshments will be offered at the Post.
