One person is dead and three others injured after a crash involving multiple heavy trucks along I-81 in Cumberland County. It happened around 9:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-81 near mile marker 34 in Penn Township.
State police say a northbound tow truck crossed over the grassy median and into the southbound lanes where it sideswiped a big rig hauling twin trailers.
The impact caused one of the twin trailers to roll onto its side. Two people inside the tractor-trailer were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, state police said.
After colliding with the big rig the tow truck slammed head-on into another tractor-trailer.
The driver of that big rig was seriously injured and taken to Penn State Hershey Medical Center for treatment.
The unidentified driver of the tow truck was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passing minivan carrying three people narrowly avoided the crash by swerving into the median. Troopers say the minivan sustained some damage by flying debris. No one inside the minivan was injured.
The investigation is ongoing.
