A Harrisburg man is charged with homicide following a deadly shooting  in downtown Harrisburg late Saturday night. Theodore Meriweather, 40, is accused of shooting 53-year-old John Lumpkins to death near Dewberry and Blackberry Streets.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting around 11:40 p.m.  and found Lumpkins laying in the road with a single gunshot wound to his upper chest, police said. He was taken to Harrisburg Hospital where he later died.

Witnesses told police the two were involved in a fight after Lumpkins found his estranged wife with Meriweather at The Pub, a downtown bar.

Meriweather and the woman left the bar to avoid any further conflict and Lumpkins followed the couple out into the street, police said.

That’s when investigators say Meriweather got his gun out to protect himself from Lumpkins and then shot him.

Meriweather approached officers at the scene and confessed to shooting him.

He was taken into custody without incident.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 717-255-7299.
