Lancaster’s AMVETS Post 19 is tackling the 20.4 percent unemployment rate among young veterans, aged 18-24.

The post’s career center is embarking on a new jobs initiative focusing on these young vets, by planning job fairs, reaching out to area VA’s and employers to emphasize the skills that these returning vets have to offer.

The jobless rate for young vets is nearly three times that of the general population.

“It’s actually heart-breaking because they give their all,” said Micky Grimm, AMVETS Post 19 Career Center Coordinator. “They say some gave all, all gave some. I think they all gave everything they have and then to come home and feel that doors are being closed in their faces.”

Grimm said Post 19’s Career Center has been able to get a job for every veteran who has come into the center looking for help.
