The PA Department of Environmental Protection’s West Nile Program will be conducting a truck mounted ultra-low volume (ULV) larval mosquito control operation in parts of Hanover Borough, York County on July 17 at 18, beginning at 3:30 a.m.
The spray will encompass all parts of the borough, South of Elm Street. The treatment is being done to control the larval stage of the Asian Tiger Mosquito.
The Truck mounted ULV spray will be conducted by DEP. The business license of the applicator is BU 5976. The product used will be Methoprene SR5 and applied at a rate of .75 oz/acre. This innovative mosquito control technique was first used operationally for the first time in August of 2011, in Lehigh County, and provided a high level of control in the Culex larval population. The application material has a very low toxicity profile to mammals and is safe for the environment.
Weather conditions and other unexpected events could delay or cancel this spray operation.
This pilot project, aimed at controlling the Asian Tiger Mosquito (ATM), will be carried out throughout the remainder of the season. If these efforts are successful, this strategy will be employed in other ATM infested areas of the state.
