A gas leak forced 15 homes and several businesses to be evacuated Wednesday morning. A private contractor performing work struck a gas line just after 7 a.m. causing a leak on the 400 block of Prospect Street in York City.

“The fire department as a precaution evacuated some of the surrounding properties. We identified the leak, patched it, made the situation safe, and now they are working on repairing that leak,” said Russell Bedell with Columbia Gas. “Those evacuations were a precaution. We did not get any free air gas readings in any of the structures. We realize that it’s an inconvenience to have to be evacuated but we want to make sure that we do everything we can to protect life and property.”

The gas line has been fixed and the road has been reopened. Residents have also been able to return home.
