A person walking on railroad tracks was struck and killed by a train in Lebanon this morning. It happened around 9:42am on the railroad tracks just west of 7th Street. Police found the victim, described only as a male, lying in the gravel west of 7th Street. EMS personnel determined the victim was deceased. A witness who was sitting in his car saw the victim for several seconds before the train hit him and told police he was walking on the tie butts that extend out from under the steel rail.
An eastbound train approached the victim from behind, sounding its horn. The front engine car hit him. The witness told police no one else was in the area.
Police say they have identified the male, however have not yet been able to notify next of kin.
An autopsy has been scheduled by Lebanon County Coroner Jeff Yocum and the investigation is ongoing. Anybody who may have witnessed the accident is asked to contact the Lebanon City Police Department.
