A high speed chase involving a wanted felon begins in Lancaster County and ends with the suspect eluding police in Maryland. The incident began at about 11:27 Tuesday morning along the 2600 block of Robert Fulton Highway, Route 222, in Fulton Township. State Police initiated a vehicle stop on a vehicle with three people inside. One of the passengers was a known felon identified as 44 year old Carl Sexton, of Oxford, Chester County.
Instead of stopping, the driver of the vehicle, 33 year old Joseph Apitsch, Jr., of Maryland, drove away at high speed south on Route 222 into Maryland. With Pennsylvania and Maryland State Police in pursuit, Apitsch, eventually came to a stop along the 2300 block of Shuresville Road in Maryland. Sexton jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot into a nearby cornfield.
State troopers along with a K-9 unit and a helicopter engaged in an intensive search for Sexton. A nearby elementary school was put in lockdown to prevent Sexton from possibly entering the building. Somehow, Sexton managed to elude searchers and remains at large.
Sexton is described as a white male, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, 160 pounds with long brown hair. He was wearing a black t-shirt and dark jeans.
Charges against Apitsch include Fleeing and Eluding and Hindering Apprehension. Another passenger in the vehicle a 28 year old female was released.
