A federal judge sentences a York man to 20 years behind bars for a violent armed carjacking that left the victim paralyzed below the waist. 22 year old Ronald Darnell Sweeney, Jr., was also ordered by U.S. District Court Judge John E. Jones, to serve three years of probation. The sentencing was part of January 2013 plea deal.
It was on October 25, 2011, that 63 year old Raymond Hernandez, was waiting to pick up his grandson while sitting in his parked vehicle near a York City elementary school. Sweeney suddenly climbed into the passenger side. Armed with a handgun, he ordered Hernandez to give up the vehicle. Hernandez with keys to the car in hand, got out and began running away.
Giving chase Sweeney caught Hernandez, and pushed him face down onto the pavement. Sweeney grab the vehicle keys and shot Hernandez in the back. The shooting left Hernandez a paraplegic.
Sweeney also faces multiple charges for a series of robberies in York in October 2011.
