Help is on the way for dog lovers looking to adopt in Pennsylvania.
New legislation would require pet stores to provide more information about the dogs in their stores.
A proposed bill would require stores to display information on dog cages, such as the age, breed, and information on the breeder.
State representative Kevin Schreiber introduced the bill. He says the law is meant to protect dogs and their owners.
“The point of this bill is to increase the level of transparency so consumers can make well-informed decisions…and that’s all that this is about. This is not a huge mandate; it’s not an unfunded mandate; it’s not to say we don’t have excellent breeders in the commonwealth,” Schreiber says.
The bill is backed by auditor general Eugene DePasquale, who says that Pennsylvania’s enforcement of existing dog laws has failed in the last several years.
