An 8 year old boy remains hospitalized after being shot by his 6 year old brother in Cumberland County over the weekend. State Police responded to a 911 call from a home along the first block of Broad Street in Southhampton Township, near Shippensburg, at about 1 o’clock Sunday afternoon. The children stayed at the home on weekends with their mother.
According to an affidavit, the mother said she was asleep and did not hear the shooting. She was awaken by the 6 year old. The mother told troopers that she was aware there was a loaded revolver as well as a loaded rifle next to the bed in the master bedroom where she slept. She also said that the boys had been sleeping on a couch in an another room.
The affidavit also stated that the mother appeared to be lethargic and she indicated that she was on several medications. She voluntarily consented to a blood test.
While police were there, a Cumberland County Children and Youth worker arrived. She told troopers that she came after receiving an anonymous tip out concern for the children that the property was unfit to live in. The affidavit described piles of trash and clutter, abandoned vehicles, open food containers, piles of dirt, and bags of trash making it difficult to walk around.
The wounded child was flown to Hershey Medical Center and was originally listed in very critical condition according to the affidavit. The investigation continues and so far no charges have been filed in the case.
