The chief of the Hershey Fire Department is warning people about two men who claimed to be with the department and tried to get into a woman’s home this weekend.
Police say the incident happened Saturday when two men went to a home in the 500 block of West Areba Avenue asking to do an inspection to make sure the smoke detectors were working properly. The woman had moved to the area recently.
The men said they were with the Hershey Fire Department.
“In my opinion, it’s someone that’s up to no good. They’re casing the house, or they’re looking to take something from the house,” said Chief Pat Leonard.
The woman told the men to go away and did not let them in, police say. The woman wasn’t hurt.
Chief Leonard says the volunteer department’s members don’t go to people’s homes or businesses for inspections. A homeowner can ask someone from the department to check on things, but firefighters don’t show up unannounced.
Leonard says residents can ask to see identification. If they’re still concerned, he urges them to call police.
“I’ve actually contacted some realtors in the area just to let them know that when somebody’s buying a home that’s new in the township, maybe they want to let them know that we don’t do this,” said Leonard.
