A small plane crashed into a building at Smoketown Airport in Lancaster County this morning and caught fire, injuring the pilot. It happened at 9:24am, as the plane was taxiing on the runway preparing for take-off. Witnesses say the plane veered out of control off the runaway and collided into a hanger. At some point a fire started in the engine compartment. The pilot, a 74 year-old man from Gordonville, was the only person on the plane. Emergency responders put the fire out and helped the pilot get out of the cockpit. He was then flown by PENNSTAR helicopter to Crozer Chester Medical Center in Chester County for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
East Lampeter Township Police and Fire Companies secured the crash until NTSB and FAA arrival. Further investigation and news releases will be conducted by those Agencies.
