The playoff drought is over. After two decades, the Pittsburgh Pirates clinch a berth in Major League Baseball’s postseason. Starling Marte smacked a solo homer in the top of the 9th inning to give the Bucs a 2-1 lead against the Cubs. The team recorded the final out on a close play at the plate in the bottom of the ninth. The Pirates then watch the Nationals lose to St. Louis in the clubhouse to make it official. The celebration began at that point for Pittsburgh’s players and their long suffering fans. The Nats loss eliminated them from postseason contention.
The Pirates still trail the Cardinals by two games with five games left in the regular season. They have two more games in Chicago before finishing the regular season with a three-game series in Cincinnati. The Reds also clinched a playoff spot tonight.
