A five-year-old girl is recovering after she was mauled by a pit bull. Now, Mary Jane Jones, 27, of Conestoga Township, is charged with reckless endangerment.

Millersville Police said after the dog attack, Jones went to a Millersville pizza shop where the dog’s owner works and attacked the woman. It was all captured on surveillance video.

Southern Regional Police said Jones responded to a Craigslist ad the woman placed for an 11-month-old pit bull puppy for sale last month.

Jones took the puppy to her Conestoga Township home on a trial basis.

Just a few hours later, the dog mauled a five-year-old relative, who was playing with three other children at the house. The girl is recovering from more than 40 puncture wounds and 80 stitches.

“She’s going to survive and be okay, of course she’s going to have mental and physical wounds that are going to be with her for the rest of her life I’m sure,” said Cpl. Ron Burger of the Southern Regional Police Department in Lancaster County.

Cpl. Burger said the dog’s owner wrote in the ad and later told Jones in a text message that the dog is very protective and should not be around children. Jones assured the owner that she does not have kids.

“For the actor to go ahead and put the dog right with children in harms’ way of the kids, it’s very unfortunate and very sad,” he said.

After the dog attacked the little girl, police returned it to its owner and the animal was later euthanized.

Jones is also charged with simple assault in the attack of the dog’s owner.
