Each year about 4,000 infants die as a result of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and the majority of SIDS deaths are due to unsafe sleeping conditions.

York Mayor Kim Bracey joined Dr. Michael Goodstein at City Hall in York to recognize national SIDS awareness month. Goodstein is a neonatalogist at York Hospital and the Director of the York County Cribs for Kids program. He says SIDS is preventable if parents and caregivers are properly educated.

The Cribs for Kids program began in 1998 and has been very successful. Since they began educating people about safe sleep, SIDS deaths decreased by 50 percent.
