A check of a suspicious vehicle by Harrisburg Police escalates into an officer firing a shot at a felony suspect fleeing in an SUV. The incident began at around Noon in the 2500 block of Susquehanna Street near Schuylkill Street in the city.
When officers arrived to check out a suspicious Jeep Cherokee, they encountered Matthew Millett, 30, of Westwood Court, Enola, Cumberland County. A check of vehicles’ registration revealed that Millett had a burglary warrant out of Florida. He resisted arrest, struggling with officers attempting to take him into custody. One officer deployed a Taser on Millett with no effect.
Millett managed to break away and jump into the SUV. He sped away almost hitting one officer. The officer fired one shot from her service handgun. No one was hit.
Officers from surrounding municipalities including Pennsylvania State Police quickly joined in the pursuit. The pursuit ended a short time later around 82nd Street and Gregs Drive in Swatara Township. The Jeep drove up over the curb and onto grass before coming to a stop. Millett got out of the vehicle and surrendered without further incident.
Because a city police officer fired her weapon, the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the case.
