The Pennsylvania State Police is investigating a crime reported by a local resident who received a call on his cell phone from a male telling him that his wife was involved in a vehicle accident. The victim was then told that he had to wire money to an account in Puerto Rico, or his wife would be harmed. The victim was told that he was to stay on the phone and not hang up.
The victim went to the bank and withdrew money. The victim then went and wired the money via MoneyGram to suspects in Puerto Rico. The victim wired over a thousand dollars. The victim’s wife was located by PSP. She was, in fact, never in danger. It is believed that the caller is out of this country. Investigation continues.
The State Police is urging citizens of Franklin County to be aware of increased recent activity from unsolicited phone calls, e-mails, letters, requesting the transfer of cash for seemingly urgent matters which are in fact scams.
These scams are created to catch people off guard by using an urgent situation to plea for money. In haste, people send funds without checking the validity of the story. Please do not wire any funds to unknown individuals or those claiming to be relatives in need. These requests will ask funds to be sent by wire and more often than not to a foreign country.
