A Carlisle man who police say was attacked by two teenagers over a parking space is speaking out.
Charles Petty Jr. says often victims of senseless violence are scared to speak up. “People need to step up. You need to step up and don’t allow these kids to get their foothold in your neighborhood,” said Petty. “In the last five years a lot of things have happened, shootings, stabbings. I would like to say to people who are going through this, don’t go behind your door and say nothing.”
Petty describes the how it all happened Friday evening in front of his North West Street home in Carlisle. “My granddaughters mother was coming to pick up her kids. She came in and said some kids were out here harassing her about parking in front of my home. I went outside and the one kid told me don’t worry about it because if I would come off of this porch he would, well I don’t want to say what he said. But I said you need to get out of here,” said Petty.
Petty did not heed the warning. “I came off the porch here and I tried to back them out of here. One of the teens grabbed the tree branch and started hitting me with the tree branch. It ended up in the street here and the other kid attacked me from the back and knocked me down. I must have passed out and he started kicking me in the head,” said Petty.
That’s when the owner of the nearby barber shop stepped in.
Jason Hobble watched as things unfolded. He describes the teens yelling about the parking spot. “They were talking about how they own the block and they can do what they want,” said Jason Hobble, owner of Platinum Shears Inc. “I was dumfounded, I was amazed. I really didn’t think they were going to swing it at him, I mean they are just kids.”
When the argument escalated into the street Hobble jumped in to help Petty. “Whenever I saw the other one come off of the step, I jumped over the fence. I came out and by the time I got into the street that’s when ‘Skip’ fell down. He got kicked and I ripped them off of him.”
He says he is disappointed with the outcome. “I got in some trouble too when I was younger, but we never did anything like that. We always respected our elders. The audacity of them, number one, to just start it over something so stupid. Because there was a parking spot right in front of her anyway. And the fact that you know, ‘Skip’ is a 65-year-old man. I don’t know what you aimed to prove. I would like to just hear the reasoning behind why they would do something like that,” said Hobble. “Somebody needed to confront that. You know, you can’t let kids run around acting like they can do whatever they want, whenever they want, say whatever they want, with just blatant disrespect for everybody around you.”
Petty suffered a big gash to his forehead, broken dentures, he got stitches in his mouth and had to get a cat scan to see if he suffered a concussion, he did not.
Borough surveillance cameras caught the incident and led police to the two teen suspects. They are facing charges of Simple Assault, harassment and Disorderly Conduct.
