It`s been a year since Hurricane Sandy hit destroying homes and businesses and leaving millions without power. Donations to the American Red Cross from people across this state and the country came piling in. They received more than $300 million in donations. They spent about 90% percent of the money that was raised. About half of that was spent immediately after Sandy hit on food shelter and relief items.
“ In longer recovery we have been giving out financial assistance and help to get back into sustainable housing and gave grants. We are still hard at work helping people that were impacted by this storm, “ says Gail McGovern, President of American Red Cross
With a storm of this size, while the red cross was prepared, they learned a lot of lessons.
“ We learn after every disaster and this one we have been pre-positioning trailers around the affected areas so if disaster strikes again supplies will be right there on the ground,” says McGovern
