According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, hundreds of adults and children are treated in emergency rooms because of eye injuries related to Halloween. But a trip to the ER can be avoided.  Trick or treating is all about who can gather the most candy first.  But sometimes it’s a matter of who’s being rushed to the emergency room.  So we have some simple safety advice that will allow your ghosts and goblins to enjoy their busy nights ahead.

Costumes can increase the risk of injury.  So doctors say avoid costumes with props that block vision.  Also, be cautious when it comes to contact lenses.  Doctors say if you use contact lenses as part of your costume, only purchase doctor prescribed lenses.  Often times they are manufactured without meeting federal health and safety standards.

Optometrist, Stephanie Riggi, of Weaver Eye Associates says, “Contact lenses are a medical device and need to be fitted for that eye and if it’s not, it’s likely to cause harm such as infection and inflammation which can be sight threatening.”

If you experience eye redness, pain or loss of vision following cosmetic lenses, seek medical attention immediately.
