We will not solve this problem until we make buying scrap metal without proof of ownership a major felony. I defy any scrap dealer to disagree. Why, because they are not now and never have been honest. Come on, fellows, defend yourselves!

So how will I prove ownership of the small pieces of scrap that I accumulate over the months around my home?
A copper thermocouple from a wall heater. An old steel driveway basketball pole. Old metal driveway sealer buckets. Old baking pan.

By forcing dealers to see ID and having name, address and phone number on the receipt. Big difference between what you describe and sewer grates and rolls of copper pipe.

We aren't going to solve this until we do something about long term unemployment. Sadly not everyone is like the nice old guy who trash-picks the recycling every week at 5:00 A.M. in search of cat food cans to turn in for the aluminum.
