By Mike Ahlers and Marlena Baldacci, (CNN) — A passenger ferry that runs between Deep Point and Bald Head Island, North Carolina, ran aground Tuesday near Battery Island, injuring passengers and a crew member, the U.S. Coast Guard and the ferry line said.
“There are some injured passengers, and they were transported by the Coast Guard,” said Joyce Fulton of Bald Head Island Limited, the parent company of Bald Head Island Transportation Inc., which operates the ferry. “The ferry transport has suspended until the Coast Guard” can determine that the passageway is safe.
The exact number of injured passengers wasn’t immediately known, Coast Guard officials said, adding they have multiple boats and “assets” at the scene.
About 50 passengers were on board the ferry when it ran aground. The incident occurred on the 9 a.m. ferry.
The trip from Deep Point to the island takes about 22 minutes, Fulton said.
As to how it happened, she said, “We’re still in the fact gathering mode.”
