A York County man was arrested Friday after he stole over $50,000 from a church in New Freedom–where he worked as a janitor, police said

Joseph H. Leggett Jr., 62, of Shrewsbury, is charged with theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.

Police were called to Leggett’s residence in late November on an unrelated incident when they noticed large piles of cash stowed away in his apartment.

Officers searched his place and found over $50,000 of cash hidden in shoe boxes, grocery bags and wooden baskets.

Police say Leggett stole the money from St. Johns the Baptist Church where he worked as a janitor.

Leggett was arrested on Friday and later released on $10,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 3.
