Fire crews battle fires in two separate homes on the same street in York County. The first fire broke out shortly after 1 o’clock in the first block of Railroad Avenue near Cly Road and River Road in Newberry Township. The first crews on the scene reported smoke and flames pouring from the house. An elderly man inside the home managed to get out safely. He was treated for smoke inhalation. However, a relative said only two of the families six dogs escaped the burning home. The home was destroyed before the fire could be brought under control. Embers from a coal stove is believed to be the cause of the fire.
Barely an hour after the first fire was reported, another fire broke out in a home a few doors away on Railroad Street. Heavily smoke was seen billowing from the building. That fire may have been started by sparks from the first fire. Fire crews remained at the scene for hours mopping up hot spots. The fire affected 15 people in the two homes. The State Police Fire Marshal is investigating.
