The community in Winterstown, York County came together Sunday night to begin saying goodbye to fallen firefighter Cory Haley.

Haley was hit by a car on Christmas Eve. He was jogging on Winterstown Road in Red Lion at 5:30 p.m., training to go into the Air Force. Only 24 years old, he was engaged to be married in February.

“He wanted to do good and didn’t want to let anybody down, he didn’t let me down, at all,” says Chief Shanan Poe. “Just an all-around good person. There’s a lot of people going to miss him,  it’s a real tough loss.”

Haley’s family held his viewing at Winterstown United Methodist Church, next to the fire station he loved, on Sunday night. The funeral will be held at the church at 11 a.m. on Monday.

“I know he’s going to look down on us and tell us to be strong,” says Lt. Walt Winemiller.

The fire company is raising money for Haley’s headstone. If you would like to help, they ask you send a check to the fire station, directed to the North Hopewell-Winterstown Fire Company, and mark on the donation “For the Cory Haley Fund.” You can visit their Facebook page for information on where to send it.
